Update: The 'new' excerpt from The Pale King, is available over at the New Yorker website now and is (or has been) titled Backbone.
Long time David Foster Wallace fans will be familiar with this story as one part of the Lannan Foundation readings (you can listen to DFW read a version of Backbone if you click through) [previously]. It confirms that the reference to a bigger piece of work during these readings back in 2000 was most likely The Pale King.
